I recently decided to start memorizing the book of James. I'm on chapter 3 right now. However, I haven't been memorizing the verse numbers. Should I? I'd have to go back to the beginning which is a little discouraging. What are you thoughts on this?
Thank you.

Anita,

Thanks for posting here. : ) I'm sorry this forum is so slow right now.

I personally wouldn't memorize the verse numbers with each verse when memorizing a passage. The verse numbers were not part of the original Scripture and it makes for a lot more work to memorize each number.

But it is helpful to know where the passage is.

I'm in the process of memorizing James as well (again...) and had that same exact question today. I came to the same exact conclusion. In addition, if I'm reciting verse numbers is not helpful if I'm repeating it as a narrative or speaking to someone else of those verses, especially since they sometimes break up a sentences.

Thanks for asking this question Smile

Hello,

Maybe I am in the minority, but I actually like to memorize verse numbers. I think it is helpful because it assists me in breaking down a verse in my mind. For example, with 3 John, I know it is 14 verses (in the KJV). I also know that verses 2, 5, and 11 begin with "Beloved." Because of this, I can break down the letter into 2-3 different parts based on that characteristic, and know how many verses need to come before the next "beloved" comes up.

Thanks!

-James
